Felt Board Story: Tops and Bottoms

February 27, 2013 by Andrea

Here are my pieces for the trickster tale, “Tops and Bottoms”. This is based off Janet Stevens’ book. I realllllly like this story and its simple to tell. Basically Bear is lazy and Hare finds a way to use Bear’s land to grow crops. He gets the tops, the bottoms and then the middles. The two pieces to the right are double sided so under the top piece is straggly roots and under the bottom piece are carrots and radishes. The ears of corn are the “middles” that Hare gets. It’s tough to see here, but I have Bear’s eyes closed for sleeping and then on the back side the eyes are open.

This is a great story, the kids always seem to enjoy it. I’ve never flannelized it. But we generally make a giant mural to hang in the library after reading it. I draw the ground line and the kids, parents do the rest. Looks like we’ll be doing it this summer! Thanks for posting ~ jane
