July 18, 2013 by Andrea

Each season we’ve offered a four week session focusing on a subject, math, art, science…and our Dig Into Science sessions this summer focus on Rocks, Fossils and Volcanos (designed by me) and a session from Audobon PA on the environment. Here is our plan for Fossils:

1)  Read Fossils Tell of Long Ago By Aliki

2) Show this video which explains fossilization:

3) Show SMALL Fossil Examples from local rock museum; Pass around smaller fossils

4) Excavate small plastic dinosaur from coffee dough rock using paintbrushes and toothpicks.

            Play Fossil Rock Anthem:

5) Identify the dinosaur using fossil prints placed around the room

6) Report one fact on dinosaur found

7) Discuss footprints as a fossil and how that can tell a story. Show

8) Craft: Dino feet using fun foam feet and kids glue on toenails

9) Red Light, Green Light : Fossil, Dinosaur

Steps 4 and 5 use these salt dough fossils and coffee dough dinos:
